The Story Behind Medellin Excelso EP

Colombian Medellin Excelso EP Green Coffee Beans from Mercon Specialty

Medellín is located in the northwestern department of Antioquia, within the Aburrá Valley of the Andes. Antioquia is one of Colombia’s largest coffee producing regions and is known for its range of microclimates shaped by steep terrain, variable elevations, and proximity to both the Andes and the Caribbean corridor. These conditions support diverse coffee growing environments across the region.

While Medellín is Colombia’s second largest city, the coffee associated with the name comes from the surrounding rural areas where production remains rooted in smallholder farming. Antioquia is considered one of the historic centers of Colombian coffee production and continues to be a major contributor to the country’s overall output.

This coffee is classified as Excelso, indicating a screen size of 15 to 16. It is grown at elevations between 1,200 and 1,900 meters above sea level in volcanic soils. Producers cultivate primarily Castillo and Caturra varieties, with coffee processed using a fully washed method and dried on patios or raised beds depending on farm conditions and local climate.
