The Story Behind Gera Grade 1 Washed Atoma Station Tuma Tesso

Gera has earned growing recognition for producing clean, expressive washed coffees that highlight the unique character of western Ethiopia. This Grade 1 washed lot was produced by smallholder farmers delivering cherry to Atoma Coffee Washing Station in the Tuma Tesso community of Gera.

Coffee delivered to Atoma Station is carefully separated and documented by Kebele (meaning neighborhood / community), supporting traceability and quality control throughout the supply chain. Smallholder producers deliver ripe cherry that is processed shortly after arrival to preserve freshness and cup quality.

For washed processing, cherries are pulped and sorted before fermentation. At Atoma Station, coffee is typically fermented for approximately eight hours before being thoroughly washed and transferred to drying tables for hand sorting. The parchment is then dried on raised beds for approximately 12 to 14 days until the desired moisture level is achieved. Throughout the drying process, the coffee is carefully managed and protected from rainfall and excessive heat to preserve quality.
