Montecillos SHG EP

These two certified lots come from a group of producers in the Montecillos region, specifically in the San Pedro de Tutule area of La Paz. Families here have dedicated generations to coffee farming, expanding their land from small inherited plots to thriving specialty coffee farms. Coffee is the economic backbone of these communities, providing consistent employment and supporting local development.

At elevations between 1,500 and 1,550 meters above sea level, the region’s climate and altitude are ideal for growing high-quality Arabica coffee. The lots are comprised of IHCAFE 90 and Catuai varieties, selectively harvested between December and March at peak ripeness.

Processing begins with eco-friendly depulpers, followed by both continuous and traditional washing methods. In the traditional method, known locally as canal de correteo, fermented coffee is washed in channels using a flowing current of water and wooden rakes. This step helps remove defective beans and enhances the overall quality. After washing, parchment is dried on patios with frequent raking for even drying and clarity in the cup.

Rainforest Alliance certification ensures that these farms meet rigorous environmental, social, and economic standards. Certified farms protect biodiversity, promote safe working conditions, and implement climate-smart practices that improve resilience and long-term sustainability.
