The Story Behind Oriente SHB EP

Guatemalan Oriente SHB EP Green Coffee Beans from Mercon Specialty

Nestled in Guatemala's far eastern highlands along the borders of Honduras and El Salvador, Nuevo Oriente is one of the country's newest coffee-growing regions. While coffee cultivation only began here in the 1950s, the region has quickly earned a reputation for producing vibrant, well-balanced coffees shaped by its unique landscape and generations of dedicated farming families.

StoneX Specialty Coffee sources this regional lot from a network of smallholder producers, many of whom have cultivated the same land for generations. Most farms operate their own wet mills, giving producers complete control over processing from harvest through drying and ensuring exceptional attention to quality at every step.

Coffee is grown between 1,200 and 1,600 meters above sea level in rich volcanic soils formed by ancient, inactive volcanoes. Cloudy skies and frequent rainfall create a slower maturation process, allowing cherries to develop greater sweetness and complexity. After harvest, coffees are carefully dried on patios or in guardiolas, depending on weather conditions, to preserve quality and consistency.

The result is a lively, approachable cup that reflects the character of Nuevo Oriente—bright, sweet, and layered with the balance and complexity that continue to make Guatemala one of the world's most celebrated coffee origins.
