The story behind the coffee

Finca Granadilla is one of our LIFT coffees from the Lempira area of Western Honduras. Owned by Hernan Castro, Granadillas has 15 hectares, 13 of which are cultivated. San Andreas is a small municipality within the state of Lempira, with a population of 15,000 people primarily involved in the cultivation of coffee. Don Hernan has four brothers and three sisters; his brothers are all coffee farmers and his sisters teach at the local school. He is a man of few words, but when asked what he finds most challenging during harvest time he pauses and answers with a frank smile, “Nothing, we love it.”

The farm sits at about 1,450 meters above sea level, with an average temperature of 71 degrees and grows Lempira and Ihcafe 90. Both are Honduran varieties based on catimor, designed to reduce insect damage and increase yield. The pickers at Granadilla are taught to only pick the red ripe cherries, and they pay particular attention to the washing, fermentation and drying of their coffees to create exceptional coffee. We were delighted to find a complex and juicy acidity with pineapple, melon, and floral notes.

LIFT is a sustainability program with three main goals: increasing production, improving quality and building better social projects. In this five-year program, the first year is focused on determining soil/plant quality and fertilizer needs as well as establishing all the social responsibility aspects of the program. During the off season, LIFT agronomists teach agronomy classes to farmers about plant health and fertilizing strategies. The objective for year five is a 40% increase in productivity and for the farmer to have enough information to continue these changes themselves moving forward. Mercon Specialty is proud to be a part of this program.
