The Story Behind Peru Nueva Esperanza Gr1 Organic

San Martin is a coffee-producing region in Peru on the northeastern slopes of the Andes. The region’s high altitude of 1,000-1,800 meters above sea level makes it an ideal environment for coffee growing. In June 2022, it was Peru's third largest coffee-producing region, with 87,163 hectares of coffee farms producing 82,319 tons annually.

The coffee industry in Peru mainly comprises smallholders who own plots of land, with farms typically between one to ten hectares. These coffee producers uphold the region's tradition of using sustainable farming methods, ensuring Peruvian coffee's quality and ethical production. These farms typically cultivate Arabica coffee varieties, such as Typica, Caturra, Bourbon, and Catimor, known for their high-quality beans. The coffee plants are often grown under the shade of native trees, which promotes biodiversity and helps to maintain a healthy ecosystem.

The washed process is the most common processing method in Peru. This process involves pulping the coffee cherry by removing the outer layer, leaving the sticky layer called the mucilage, and then fermenting the beans for some time to develop the unique flavors. The beans are then washed and sun-dried on patios or raised beds, resulting in a brighter cup profile.
