ICYMI: International Coffee Day Blog
StoneX Specialty Coffee celebrates International Coffee Day by recognizing its significance beyond just celebrating the beverage we all love. It's a tribute to every bean's complex journey—from the hands of dedicated producers to the roasters who bring out its unique flavors. This day gives us a chance to reflect on the relationships we've built with coffee-growing communities across the globe, the artistry behind sustainable sourcing, and the passion that drives every cup.
Fresh Crop Arrival from Brazil & Colombia
Flavor notes: Medium body, green pepper, cedar, earthy
Mandheling coffee is processed using a method referred to as wet-hulling where coffee cherries are harvested, de-pulped then washed and partially sundried. Following this step, the coffee is wet hulled to remove the parchment skin then dried further in green form before sorting and grading. The resulting green coffee has a beautiful blue green appearance.
Flavor notes: Medium body, cumin spice, basil, green herbs, complex acidity and aroma
The Sumatra Lintong TP is renowned for its unique coffee process. After the coffee is picked and processed at the mill, a group of women, typically the ones involved in this process, meticulously pick through the defects three times. This rigorous process, known as triple pick (TP), ensures the coffee's high quality and is a testament to the producers' unwavering dedication and meticulous attention to detail.
Flavor notes: Brown sugar, cocoa, toasted nut, honey, slight red currant, heavy body
The Cerrado Mineiro region is one of the most advanced in terms of agricultural technology, using modern practices such as efficient irrigation, soil analysis, and strict quality control. This results in coffees with excellent consistency and high-quality standards, ensuring their presence in both national and international markets. Cerrado Mineiro beans are known for their sweetness, balanced acidity, and full body, with notes of fruits, chocolate, and in some cases, caramel and honey. The Ipê Amarelo Cerrado Mineiro 16up is an example of a premium coffee from this region, combining all of these characteristics and offering a unique sensory experience
Future Arrival of Woman-Produced Specialty Coffee:
Brazil Marjorie Pereira Sitio Ipe Honey ML
Flavor Notes: Complex, delicate acidity, tropical fruit, peach, red apple, medium body, honey and candy-like
Marjorie Pereira’s journey begins in the heart of Três Corações City, where the lush Ipê Farm sits 1000 meters above sea level in the rich lands of South Minas. On this farm, two extraordinary coffee varieties, Mundo Novo and Arara, thrive under her care. Hand-picked with precision, only the ripest cherries are harvested before being meticulously pulped and dried – first on patios and then slowly in a rotary dryer. But the story of Ipê Farm is more than a tale of coffee cultivation; it’s a story of resilience. Read her full coffee story here.
Colombia Bellavista Estate Alma Yulieth
Flavor notes: Floral and lemony, bright, complex acidity, nectarine, plum, hibiscus, sweet lemon peel finish
Bellavista single estate is located in El Túnel village in the Cajibío municipality of Cauca department in the south western part of the country. The municipality is found over the Pubenza Valley, also known as Alto Cauca Valley, at 1760 masl and is crossed by Cajibío, Pedregosa, and Cauca rivers. Read the full coffee story here.
Brazil Isabela Reis Bela Vista Anaerobic Natural
Flavor notes: Tart cherry, sweetness, fruity aroma, red wine, dried fruit, and raisin cocoa.
Isabela Lima Reis is a third-generation coffee farmer in the South of Minas region, in the southern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Minas Gerais is the third largest producer of arabica coffee in Brazil, accounting for 30% of the total harvest. Most of Brazil’s coffee farms are relatively flat and use mechanical harvesters, and in Minas this is also true, but parts of the region are quite mountainous, and here farmers still handpick their coffee. Market News:
The New York market topped out on September 26th to close at 273.90 vs. Z24, and on the same day, London closed at $5,136 vs. F24. Whether it was the forecasted rains across the coffee belt in Brazil or the postponement of the European Union Deforestation Regulation, the markets sold off aggressively, with the New York market quickly tumbling $0.30 to touch a recent low of 243.35 on October 7th. At the same time, the weather forecasts show the arrival of the rainy season in Brazil with the onset of the flowering of the Brazilian coffee tree. Until today, October 21, 2024, recent rains have been adequate for flowering and fixation, although doubt remains as to what damage may have been caused by the prolonged dry season up until now. The market now has another few months until the middle of January when the next reliable crop estimates start to emerge out of Brazil post-flowering and fixation.
